PARIS — Serena Williams was set up with a comfortable opening path at the French Open draw ceremony on Thursday, though doubts remained about her physical readiness to contend for a 24th Grand Slam singles title before main-draw play, which starts Sunday.
Williams, who has played only nine matches this year and who withdrew from each of her last two tournaments after a single match because of a persistent knee injury, has worn a knee brace at practice this week.
On a visit to Disneyland Paris on Thursday, she was photographed sitting in a wheelchair, and the image was shared online by the Belgian player Ysaline Bonaventure. When asked about it, a spokeswoman for Williams, Kelly Bush Novak, said Williams had used the wheelchair on Thursday for precautionary rest.
Williams, 37, has not won a tournament since the 2017 Australian Open, after which she took about 13 months of maternity leave. She is seeded 10th at Roland Garros and will open against 82nd-ranked Vitalia Diatchenko. Williams would then face a qualifier or 107th-ranked Dalila Jakupovic in the second round.
The first seeded player Williams could meet is No. 22 Bianca Andreescu, who is returning to action after missing the tuneup events on clay because of an injured right shoulder that forced her out of the Miami Open. In the fourth round, Williams could face eighth-seeded Ashleigh Barty, whom she beat in the second round at this event a year ago.
Williams could face top-seeded Naomi Osaka in the quarterfinals. Osaka, who defeated Williams in last year’s contentious United States Open final and won this year’s Australian Open, was dealt a tricky road in her bid for a third consecutive Grand Slam title.
Osaka, who has not advanced past the third round of a French Open, will begin against 92nd-ranked Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, who has not won a match at a Grand Slam since 2015. She would then face the winner of a big first-round match between the 2017 French Open women’s champion, Jelena Ostapenko, and Victoria Azarenka, a former No. 1.
Ostapenko, ranked 40th, has struggled this year to a mediocre 8-14 record but is considered a dangerous player when she is hot because of a go-for-broke style that can take a match out of an opponent’s hands.
Azarenka, ranked 44th, has not consistently found her top form since her return from maternity leave in 2017 was complicated by a prolonged custody dispute. But she has been rounding into stronger form, including a win last week at the Italian Open against Elina Svitolina, the event’s defending champion, on her way to the quarterfinals. (Osaka pulled out of the quarterfinal round in Rome with an injury to her right hand but has been practicing at Roland Garros.)
In the third round, Osaka could face 29th-seeded Maria Sakkari, a 23-year-old Greek who has surged into the top 30 for the first time on the strength of a 14-4 clay record this year, which included a run to the semifinals at the Italian Open and a title in Rabat, Morocco.
In the fourth round, Osaka is scheduled to face 14th-seeded Madison Keys, the champion this year on the green clay of Charleston, S.C. Keys knocked Osaka out in the third round of the French Open a year ago.
The defending champion, Simona Halep, seeded third, is also in the top half of the draw, along with sixth-seeded Petra Kvitova. Halep opens her title defense against 47th-ranked Ajla Tomljanovic.
Last year’s runner-up, seventh-seeded Sloane Stephens, opens against 110th-ranked Misaki Doi but faces a potentially steep challenge in the fourth round. She could face the ninth-seeded Svitolina; the 2016 champion, Garbiñe Muguruza; or the seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams. Kiki Bertens, at No. 4, is the high seed in Stephens’s quarter of the draw.
Karolina Pliskova, who vaulted to the No. 2 seeding after winning the Italian Open on Sunday, anchors the bottom quarter of the women’s draw, where she is joined by fifth-seeded Angelique Kerber, who is seeking a career Grand Slam. She won her third Grand Slam title at Wimbledon last year.
Novak Djokovic, who is the top seed on the men’s side and is seeking a fourth consecutive Grand Slam title, faces Hubert Hurkacz, a rangy, talented Pole who has gone from 88th to 43rd in the rankings this year. In the second round, Djokovic would face a qualifier or Sam Querrey, who defeated him at Wimbledon in 2016.
Fifth-seeded Alexander Zverev and ninth-seeded Fabio Fognini, the recent Monte Carlo champion, loom as potential quarterfinal opponents for Djokovic. Last year’s runner-up, fourth-seeded Dominic Thiem, and eighth-seeded Juan Martín del Potro are potential semifinal opponents for Djokovic.
The 11-time champion Rafael Nadal is seeded second and has a considerably more favorable opening path: He will begin against a qualifier and would then face the winner of a match between two qualifiers.
Third-seeded Roger Federer, who is playing at Roland Garros for the first time since 2015, opens against the Monte Carlo quarterfinalist Lorenzo Sonego and could face the Budapest champion, No. 29 Matteo Berrettini, in the third round. Sixteenth-seeded Marco Cecchinato, a surprise semifinalist at the French Open a year ago, and 17th-seeded Diego Schwartzman are possible fourth-round opponents. Sixth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas, who knocked Federer out in the fourth round of the Australian Open in January, is a possible quarterfinal opponent.
The first seeded player Tsitsipas could face is No. 32 Frances Tiafoe, who got into the seedings on Thursday after the withdrawal of Milos Raonic. Had Tiafoe not obtained a last-minute seeding, this would have been the first Grand Slam event since 1973 with no seeded American man. John Isner, the top-ranked American man, at No. 10, has not played since the Miami Open final, where he sustained a stress fracture in his left foot.B:
